Multi-tasking is effective and at times, enjoyable, depending upon the endeavor.
Including female grappling.
Most of us understand the need for physical exercise if we want to remain healthy or desire to become more fit.
If you are a woman looking to get involved in female grappling, and if you are already exercising, why not incorporate exercises specially designed for grappling into your routine.
You will have plenty of company.
As reported by ESPN, “87 girls from 55 high schools found their way to the mats for North Carolina’s first official high school girls’ wrestling invitational contest.
The state is one of many experiencing a boom in female wrestlers. For years, girls around the country were folded into boys’ programs. But since 2001, the number of girls in high school wrestling has soared from 3,405 to nearly 17,000, buoyed by the introduction of women to Olympic wrestling in 2004 and the rise of MMA.”
If you are attracted to the sport, perhaps approach with a plan.
A great book that speaks to having a grappling plan is found on Amazon.
Wrestle Like A Girl Hardcover – January 1, 2016
By Jamie Moffatt (Author), Craig Sesker (Author), Sally Roberts (Foreword)
“Wrestle Like A Girl – which chronicles the struggles and obstacles American women’s wrestlers have faced and overcome while becoming a fixture on the Olympic Games program. The program reached its pinnacle when Helen Maroulis won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio! All proceeds from book sales will go to the Wrestle Like A Girl organization.”
You might find the book to be a catalyst to move your needle from, maybe I would like to wrestle, to I think I’ll go forward and try wrestling, to I’m excited to wrestle, because I have become really good at it.
An article that takes a different and more comprehensive approach to the early stages of the process is found at https://www.grapplearts.com/a-girls-guide-to-grappling-what-you-need-to-know-before-you-start-rolling/ .
We love their step by step guide to clothing, hair, makeup, nails and picking a partner to social decorum during your training.
Our suggestion, in terms of picking a partner, is to pick someone larger and stronger than yourself. Perhaps even train with a male friend. The advantage to that is fairly obvious.
Once you begin to wrestle girls your own size, you will have a distinct advantage.
In terms of incorporating wrestling into your exercise routine, have you ever thought about supplementing your program by attending a wrestling camp?
Word has it that the Wrestle Like A Girl organization produces some exceptional camps.
At wrestlelikeagirl.org they educate, “Empowerment Camps and Clinics are more than just wrestling clinics. Our camps work to develop the total athlete by incorporating championship life skills such as building confidence and self-esteem, teamwork, goal setting, resiliency training, and proper nutrition and hydration. Wrestle Like A Girl Empowerment Camps and Clinics employ some of the world’s best women’s wrestling clinicians to teach wrestling techniques, and these top athletes also serve as role models and advisers for the next generation of leaders.”
Sounds like a great plan.
You will receive help from great wrestlers from around the world, especially if you participate in their Empowering Women through their Sports Leadership Program.
They add, “This five-month, leadership program focuses on empowering international women wrestlers to serve their local communities by increasing access to and opportunities for participation in sports. Annually, 4 to 6 participants demonstrating leadership skills and experience in the sports sector are chosen from a list of nominees selected by Washington, D.C. -based Embassies and wrestling governing bodies across the world. These delegates are typically between 25 and 40 years of age, proficient in English, and have had success at the international wrestling experience.”
To be the best, it is certainly great to learn from the best.
From around the world.

Wrestling Exercises
By Brady Dylan
When training for wrestling, it is important to utilize a workout specifically tailored the sport. A generic workout plan may keep you healthy, but it will not prepare you for a wrestling match. The best wrestling exercises are those that keep the body strong and well-rounded. Good wrestling exercises will also emphasize the muscles most heavily used in a wrestling match. Wresting training should include squats, lunges and diamond push-ups.
Wrestling Exercises: Squats
Squats are great wrestling exercises for strengthening the thighs and glutes. Beginners generally perform squats without added weight, but wrestlers should perform squats while holding a bar on the meaty part of the upper back. Start by standing up straight with feet hip distance apart. Keeping the weight in the heels and the chest lifted, bend your legs slowly, as if sitting back in a chair. Hold for a moment at the bottom and then straighten to the starting position.
Wrestling Exercises: Lunges
Like squats, lunges build strength in the lower body. Lunges can be performed with a bar on the upper back or while holding a dumbbell in each hand. To start, stand up straight with feet shoulder distance apart. Step forward until there is almost a yard between your front and back feet. Bend both knees, making sure to keep the front knee directly over the front foot. Push up and step back into the starting position. You can continue doing repetitions on the same side, or alternate sides.
Wrestling Exercises: Diamond Push-ups
This wrestling training targets the triceps. Begin in a push-up position with the hands close together so that the two pointer fingers and thumbs are touching (forming a diamond shape). Bend your elbows until they form a 90 degree angle and then push back up to the starting position. Avoid locking the elbows while doing push-ups.
Wrestling exercises and drills do not need to be especially complicated. Choose a variety of basic exercises, (such as squats, lunges and diamond push-ups) that target a variety of muscles.
