November 25, 2022,
Not wanting to face reality in troubling times is understandable.
Wanting to escape to a better place and get away is an understatement.
Delaying facing reality is sometimes enacted.
But at some point, if you don’t face reality, it will come crashing in on you.
Better to be prepared for it.
Like the Ostrich.
Contrary to the popular misconception, ostriches do not bury their head in the sand when scared or frightened.
Quite the opposite.
When an ostrich senses danger and cannot run away, it will flop to the ground and remain still, attempting to blend in with the terrain.
So, if you see pictures of an ostrich appearing as if it has its head in the sand, they dig shallow holes in the sand to serve as nests for their eggs. Then the ostrich will use her beak several times a day to turn the eggs in the nest, creating the illusion of burying its head in the sand.
When you look into the future, are you preparing for it or, unlike the ostrich, avoid looking at it by burying your head in the sand?
It is interesting when we speak to young people that so many are still optimistic about the future despite the massive droughts, ocean pollution, social unrest and global conflicts.
We applaud that.
How do you prepare for a future where the above issues, along with other ones, are indeed very real?
There are many ways to prepare for the future but whatever future you have, it will take money to get there or escape it.
Lots of it. Save money. That is one of the most important principles regarding preparing for the future. People without money face tough choices and options.
Stay on top of technology.
We live in an information age and the more information you can get about your subject matter of concern, the more it will help you make better decisions to plan for your future to adjust to it.
Talk with trusted friends about how they see the future and how they will prepare for it.
We have found, at times, we have gotten some really good ideas about preparing for the future through collaborative discussions.
Personally, we avoid the survivalist, get away from it all and live in a bunker mentality. If things get that bad and that is the life you have to live, we wonder is it even worth living?
If you are a high school or college student, this is exactly the time to participate in those discussions.
We are going to do that now ourselves and look to others on their thoughts about preparing for the future.
Let’s walk over to the book store.

Anyone who wants to have a better, more inspiring life in the future has to plan for it―to future-proof it. In this powerful little book, Lindkvist presents a set of practical and easy-to-apply tools that will help you to create a mindset and path for tomorrow.”
Intriguing.
Magnus Lindkvist is one of the world’s leading and most respected futurologists. He works with governments and corporations around the world. He is the author of ‘When the Future Begins’, ‘Everything We Know is Wrong’, and ‘The Attack of the Unexpected’.
Let’s look at another.
This book takes another approach. We mentioned that we live in an information age. Here might be some valuable information.
What the Future Looks Like: Scientists Predict the Next Great Discoveries―and Reveal How Today’s Breakthroughs Are Already Shaping Our World Paperback – April 17, 2018
By Jim Al-Khalili (Editor)
“Every day, scientists conduct pioneering experiments with the potential to transform how we live. Yet it isn’t every day you hear from the scientists themselves! Now, award–winning author Jim Al–Khalili and his team of top-notch experts explain how today’s earthshaking discoveries will shape our world tomorrow—and beyond.
Pull back the curtain on:
- genomics
- robotics
- AI
- the “Internet of Things”
- synthetic biology
- transhumanism
- interstellar travel
- colonization of the solar system
- teleportation
- and much more
And find insight into big–picture questions such as:
Will we find a cure to all diseases? The answer to climate change? And will bionics one day turn us into superheroes?
The scientists in these pages are interested only in the truth—reality–based and speculation–free. The future they conjure is by turns tantalizing and sobering: There’s plenty to look forward to, but also plenty to dread. And undoubtedly the best way to for us to face tomorrow’s greatest challenges is to learn what the future looks like—today.”
Okay. Worth discussing. Some of it seems a little “way out there” but that is why you keep an open mind to different thoughts. 30 years ago, how would you like to describe today’s Internet to a high school or college audience? At least they might be receptive to it.
Whether they could visualize of understand it is a different matter.
Many older adults back then would probably scoff at it.
We said that the previous book appeared to be a little out there so we are now going to contrast it with a view that is very personal.
Your personal future and how you can groom yourself for it.
