As the level of competition improves in the fully competitive female submission wrestling industry, primarily due to the increased participation in MMA training, even from newer girls, the combination of the increased skill level along with competing at a 15 minute match interval, means good hydration is extremely important.
A female wrestling source we have often quoted wrestlelikeagirl.org explains, “Hydration is a key driver to proper nutrition; water follows sodium in the human body; for a successful season, applying re-hydration techniques post-weigh-ins and post-practice/matches are crucial to the recovery process.”
Good to know.
When it comes to health, our industry is a highly educated, intelligent and proactive when it comes to good health, physical exertion and nutrition but every now and then, it is good to get some reminders to enhance what we are already doing.
Essentially most of us know how to regulate our hydration because it is as though our body speaks to us.
The team at scientificamerican.com educates, “Natural thirst mechanisms are the reason that most of us do not need to be overly concerned about hydration. The adult body is roughly 60 percent water—closer to 80 percent in the lungs and kidneys—and it carefully controls the concentration of water.”
While this may be a subject where a female grappler may think, I already know this, gathering ideas from experts in the industry may enhance your program even in the smallest way.
We thought about this quite a bit when the exciting female MMA star Aspen Ladd, let go by the UFC and soon signed by the PFL, spoke in great length about the difficulty of losing weight to make her required weight and the effect it had on her body, especially in terms of losing too much, too soon.
Keep thinking hydration.
Let’s first turn to video.

“How Female Athletes should RECOVER from Hard Training Sessions”
We found that the above video is the perfect balance between not being too long, adept at being instructional without being boring and very informative. It is worth a look.
Time to walk over to the bookstore.
This one intrigued us.

Quench: Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body Through the New Science of Optimum Hydration Hardcover – June 12, 2018
By Dana Cohen MD (Author), Gina Bria (Author)
“Based on breakthrough new science in the field of hydration, Quench debunks many popular myths about “getting enough water” and offers a revolutionary five-day jump start plan that shows how better hydration can reduce or eliminate ailments like chronic headaches, weight gain, gut pain, and even autoimmune conditions.
Chronic headaches, brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, gut pain, autoimmune conditions. We may think these and other all-too-common modern maladies are due to gluten intake or too much sugar or too little exercise. But there is another missing piece to the health puzzle: Proper hydration.
Yes, even in this era of Poland Spring many of us are dehydrated due to moisture-lacking diets, artificial environments, medications, and over-dependence on water as our only source of hydration. For this reason, that new diet or exercise plan may fail because our body doesn’t have enough moisture to support it.
Quench presents a wellness routine that can reverse all of that, based on breakthrough new science in the field of hydration.
Readers will be surprised to learn that drinking too much water can flush out vital nutrients and electrolytes. Here is where “gel water” comes in: the water from plants (like cucumber, berries, aloe), which our bodies are designed to truly absorb right down to the cellular level. In fact, Ms. Bria’s work as an anthropologist led her to the realization that desert people stay hydrated almost exclusively from what they eat, including gel plants like cactus.
Based on groundbreaking science from the University of Washington’s Pollack Water Lab and other research, Quench offers a five-day jump start plan: hydrating meal plans and the heart of the program, smoothies and elixirs using the most hydrating and nutrient-packed plants. Another unique feature of their approach is micro-movements — small, simple movements you can make a few times a day that will move water through your fascia, the connective tissue responsible for hydrating our bodies.
You will experience more energy, focus, and better digestion within five days . . . then move onto the lifetime plan for continued improvements, even elimination of symptoms.”
Those are some strong promises but even if one of their ideas work, we are all for it.
Ultimately in the progression of a fully competitive female grappler, any way that you can enhance your wrestling hydration program is great for you.
