January 4, 2023,
A teenager should be full of energy.
That could be a perception among many.
In terms of females participating in high school sports, since the implementation of Title Nine, things have improved.
Energetically.
The National Federation of State High Schools Association (nfhs.org) educated, “June 23, 2022, marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. And over the past 50 years it has been realized that interscholastic athletics participation can lead to better outcomes in education, positive health benefits and even improved opportunities in later employment.”
The view about participation in sports for girls is clear. Participation is great for you. Especially as a teenager.
The National Library of Medicine (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) reported, “From 1973 to 2018, the percentage of high school sports played by girls increased from 24.2% to 42.9%, Girls’ participation in high school sports continues to grow not only in numbers but in the types of sports played. Between 1998 and 2018, the greatest increases were noted in ice hockey and wrestling, which had fewer than 1% female participation before 1998.”
All of that is great news.
In the larger picture the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources (health.gov) reminds, “Physical activity is key to improving the health of the nation. Based on the latest science, the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans is a flagship resource for health professionals and policymakers that provides recommendations on how everyone can improve their health through regular physical activity. Learn ways to help people understand the benefits of physical activity and how to make it a part of their regular routine.”
Good to know.
Having said that, CNN reported, “Adolescents should be getting at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity every day, according to the World Health Organization. Yet a 2019 study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health journal showed less than 20% of school-going adolescents around the globe are getting this much activity, with girls less active than boys. In the United States, that figure is only slightly higher, with 24% of children ages 6 to 17 being physically active for 60 minutes per day, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
Okay, so there is some work to do.
In the gym and outdoors. Perhaps in the home too.
Sometimes we need a little inspiration and there are some teenagers out there on the Social Media who can help inspire you into shape.
