January 21, 2023,
Cyclone winds, heavy rains, California floods, Buffalo snow storms and a lot of shoveling.
If you didn’t know it was winter, now you do.
Just a reminder.
Another reminder is that during the winter, we sure need our doses of vitamin C.
Now, we could get it the direct way, through oranges or orange juice but we desire to have a little more fun to not only get our vitamin C, through creative measures but enjoy the taste of tangy orange as well.
Some nutritious basics about this tasty and tangy fruit.
The orange originated in a region encompassing Southern China, Northeast India, and Myanmar, and the earliest mention of the sweet orange was in Chinese literature in 314 BC.
As of 1987, orange trees were found to be the most cultivated fruit tree in the world.
Orange trees are widely grown in tropical and subtropical climates for their sweet fruit.
As of 2012, sweet oranges accounted for approximately 70% of citrus production.
In 2019, 79 million tonnes of oranges were grown worldwide, with Brazil producing 22% of the total, followed by China and India.
Nice history.
Now for some direct benefits.
The team at webmd.com educate, “The 3 grams of fiber in a medium orange help keep your bowels healthy, your cholesterol and risk of heart disease low, and ulcers at bay. Fiber also slows the way your body absorbs sugar.”
Good to know.
There’s more.
They add, “Oranges are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins and minerals. The most noteworthy of these is vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant that prevents cell damage.”
Love what vitamin C can do for us.
Time to focus on vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin found in citrus and other fruits and vegetables.
It is used to prevent and treat scurvy.
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in the repair of tissue, the formation of collagen, and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters.
Earth to Captain Picard. Can you read me?
It is required for the functioning of several enzymes and is important for immune system function.
It also functions as an antioxidant.
So many benefits.
Spoiler alert.
Research on vitamin C in the common cold has been divided into effects on prevention, duration, and severity. A Cochrane review which looked at, at least 200 mg/day, concluded that vitamin C taken on a regular basis was not effective in prevention of the common cold.
We can live with that (slightly coughing).
So, without misconceptions, those are some of the benefits.
Now for some fun.
We all have our concoctions and special formulas in how we use oranges.
We love to squeeze a fresh orange into Orange Spice tea. In our opinion, hot or cold, it makes the tea taste better and gives us a feeling of health benefits.
Too, with some of these orange cold pressed juices, we like to add it there as well.
Don’t forget smoothies. Even when the label says no added sugar, they do taste very sweet. We like to add some fresh squeezed juice from an orange as well.
Now that’s just us.
Others have some tremendous ideas on how you can get your vitamin C, and have a tasty menu of orange related products as well.
Time to walk over to the book store.
