March 5, 2023,
The phrase has already been coined so we can’t stamp it here.
We can certainly think about it every time we eat our oatmeal.
Breakfast of champions.
In our experience with oatmeal, while we won’t put a logo on it, we would say it is an incredibly powerful super food.
The basics.
Oatmeal is a preparation of oats that have been de-husked, steamed, and flattened, or a coarse flour of hulled oat grains (groats) that have either been milled (ground) or steel-cut.
Ground oats are also called white oats. Steel-cut oats are known as coarse oatmeal, Irish oatmeal, or pinhead oats. Rolled oats were traditionally thick old-fashioned oats, but can be made thinner or smaller, and may be categorized as quick oatmeal or instant oatmeal depending on the cooking time required, which is determined by the size of the oats and the amount of precooking.
Now for the important part.
It’s all about your health.
Oatmeal and other oat products were the subject of a 1997 ruling by the Food and Drug Administration that consuming oat bran or whole rolled oats can lower the risk of heart disease when combined with a low-fat diet via the effect of oat beta-glucan to reduce levels of blood cholesterol.
A similar conclusion was reached in 2010 by the European Food Safety Authority.
That is massive.
To get two different studies, paid for and produced by two different groups to agree on the summation is incredibly rare.
The team at webmd.com add, “A specific fiber in oats called beta-glucan can lower both your LDL (bad) cholesterol and your total cholesterol. LDL is known to cause clogs in your arteries and damage your heart tissues. Controlling your cholesterol cuts your odds of heart attack and stroke.”
Incredibly important, the older you get.
Time to look at preparation.
Regarding the taste, it’s not what you eat, it’s what you eat it with and how you prepare it.
In the United States, oatmeal is often served as a porridge with milk or cream and a sweetener, such as brown sugar or honey. It may include additional ingredients such as peanut butter, cinnamon or various types of fruits.
Have to say, not our favorite way to eat it.
OUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
We have to admit, those in our circle are not really fond of the porridge approach. You can only eat so much of that at a time.
We’ve taken a more creative approach.
What we do is boil a small portion of water until it is hot. Place a couple teaspoons of raw oatmeal at the bottom to cook until thickened. Then we get some flavored store bought granola, be it cinnamon, honey oat or banana and sprinkle it on top of the cooked oat meal.
Spread it around evenly.
Then we really have fun.
We get two heaping spoons of natural fruit pie, be it apple, cherry, berry, lemon or peach and layer that on the top.
Then micro wave it to a warm temperature. It is yummy without having that dry oatmeal taste.
The wonderful benefit is that it often has the effect of solidifying digestion so you don’t have loose stools or worse.
Certainly worked for one of our friends.
He eats oatmeal this way for dessert at least 5 times a week.
Now, that was our personal experience. Hopefully that might work for you.
We desire more ideas.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore.
