March 12, 2023,
To the outside world, your reputation helps them form an opinion of who you are.
Who you have been.
Good, bad or in between.
All of that is okay if it is based upon your defined behavior and the truth.
Unfortunately sometimes it is not.
This is extremely important at almost all stages of your life, especially once you are out of high school.
How important is your reputation?
If you are a professional athlete, tens of millions of dollars may be at stake. If you are running for a major political office, winning votes are at stake. Within the company you work for, a major promotion could be at stake.
The list goes on.
The challenge with a reputation is, it takes years to build up and you’re only one mistake away from ruining it.
Forever.
On the other hand, even if you live a rock solid life, you are one accusation from having it ruined.
Time for a true life experience.
We have an associate who was an Assistant Job Coach in a Special Needs Program. He and his senior partner and supervisor would drive their clients around in a van to various scheduled projects.
Our associate, who we’ll call Rick, was working with a female Job Coach, who felt because she was so good at her job that she could fudge the rules.
One day while the two Job Coaches and 6 clients were relaxing at a fast food restaurant, one of her favorite clients needed to go to the restroom, asked her permission and she let him go.
By himself.
Rick instantly protested. “He cannot go to the restroom by himself. I will go with him and in the future, as long as we work together, when he, or any other client for that matter, needs to go anywhere out of our eyesight, someone needs to go with him.”
His female partner was quietly enraged.
What was Rick’s reasoning?
The client’s safety should be the prime motivation for their decision making as Job Coaches.
But saving your own skin should be a major motivation as well.
What if this client walks towards the restroom, sees a cute puppy outside, detours, leaves the restaurant, walks towards the puppy and gets hit and killed by a car?
What in the world do you think would happen to her and Rick?
The first question their employer would ask is, why wasn’t either Job Coach with the client? What were they doing that prevented one of them from escorting him to the restroom?
Answer. Eating.
The employer would go ballistic.
Then, they would think about protecting themselves from liability and throw her and Rick to the wolves.
Rick and the Special Needs Whisperer would be on the six o’clock news.
In orange jumpsuits.
The prosecutor would make a name for him or herself and their reputation as being tough on crime and prosecute Rick and his partner to the full extent of the law.
Make the case very public.
Have the grieving parents on television.
Rick would get raped in prison.
If he survives that, with a felony on his record and older, what kind of job do you think Rick could get?
Can you see why Rick balked at her giving any of the clients special privileges to go anyplace alone?
So, after that incident at the restaurant, something insidious begin to happen at the office.
When other female Job Coaches worked with Rick, they told him that his former partner was saying things about him. What kind of things?
That he was a sexual predator and to keep their Special Needs female clients away from him. They said he should confront the person spreading these falsehoods.
What was Rick’s response?
He did nothing.
He said nothing.
For a month.
Why?
He needed to get statements from at least two witnesses as to what she was saying.
Rick would absolutely never confront her because then she could say that he said something inappropriate to her or worse, threatened violence against her.
No way was Rick going to confront her privately.
What he did do, once he had the statements, was to go to Human Resources and file a formal complaint.
Even that was risky.
While he was working with another veteran female Job Coach, based upon previous incidents like this, she told him that after this was over, one of them would be fired, possibly Rick.
Rick was determined to clear his name so he pressed forward anyway.
After meeting with HR, they called his former female Job Coach into the office, separately.
How did she respond?
She broke down and cried and admitted she just made it up.
Unbelievable.
Was she fired? No. She was suspended for just a few days along with the other female Job Coaches in the office who spread the rumor.
That’s it.
False accusations like that appear to be prevalent in today’s world and with the power of the internet, your public reputation could be ruined forever.
It also makes real female victims less believable because so many others engage in lies, often for personal revenge.
Yes, sadly this is a very true story.
This makes it imperative that you are always aware of your surroundings and, especially in a work setting, evaluate if you should be alone in any capacity with members of the opposite sex.
If your reputation is publicly and falsely damaged, perhaps it is wise not to confront the accuser directly but do some research on your own and possibly talk to an attorney.
At the time, Rick was ignorant of the law.
Had that happened in the present, because he had witness statements, he would consult an attorney and most likely file a lawsuit.
Unfortunately, today, the eternal make up of many people appear to be changing where this kind of behavior is becoming more common.
Our suggestion?
Don’t become paranoid but use common sense.
First of all, don’t get intoxicated in potentially compromising situations.
At FCI Female Sports Events, under no circumstances are a male and female associate or Fem Competitor allowed to be alone together in or near the event space.
As for you, continue to build up a fine reputation but exercise self-control in speech and behavior.
Especially when you are young.
Get your reputation off to a good start by working hard and being an honorable person.
Despite the societal changes in behavior where amoral people do not care how they harm others and have no empathy for them, continue to build friendships and enjoy life but by all means, do it with forethought and caution.
