Young and environmentally active.
That is a five star title.
None of us should want the planet and life on earth to become more dystopian than it already is.
Some people feel nothing. That’s too bad.
Some people feel bad about it, but do nothing. That’s not as bad but an argument could be made, almost as bad.
Some people are trying to do something about it. That is really great.
The environmentally conscious team at amazonwatch.org educates, “Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry, Uzo Aduba, Jane Fonda, Mark Ruffalo, Rosario Dawson, Alyssa Milano, Orlando Bloom, Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver, Misha Collins, Sônia Braga, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Alice Braga, Wagner Moura, and Fernando Meirelles are among a growing list of international artists supporting demands from Brazil and the U.S. calling on Biden to choose: the Amazon rainforest or Bolsonaro.”
Apparently, Indigenous leaders from the Amazon have reached out to U.S. and Brazilian organizations, policymakers, and artists to help protect the rainforest during this critical time.
Why is it so critical?
Deforestation or forest clearance is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land that is then converted to non-forest use.
Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests.
About 31% of Earth’s land surface is covered by forests at present.
Very important, this is one-third less than the forest cover before the expansion of agriculture, with half of that loss occurring in the last century.
Between 15 million to 18 million hectares of forest, an area the size of Bangladesh, are destroyed every year. On average 2,400 trees are cut down each minute.
Some would say it is like environmental shootings per minute.
Some of them old growth trees.
On February 12, 2022, the team at fbcnews.com.fj adds, “The number of trees cut down in the Brazilian Amazon in January far exceeded deforestation for the same month last year, according to government satellite data.
The area destroyed was five times larger than 2021, the highest January total since records began in 2015. Environmentalists accuse Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro of allowing deforestation to accelerate.”
One celebrity trying to make a difference in the halt of deforestation is singer Katy Perry.
Katy Perry, is an American singer-songwriter and television personality.
Known for her influence on modern pop music and her campy style, she has been referred to as the “Queen of Camp” by Vogue.
She rose to fame with One of the Boys (2008), a pop rock record containing her debut single “I Kissed a Girl” and follow-up single “Hot n Cold“, which reached number one and three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 respectively.
Her empowerment-themed album Prism (2013) had two U.S. number one singles “Roar” and “Dark Horse“. Both their respective music videos made Perry the first artist to have multiple videos reach one billion views on Vevo.
Ms. Perry is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 143 million records worldwide.
All of her studio albums released under Capitol have individually surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, totaling six billion streams.
She has nine U.S. number one singles, three U.S. number one albums and has received various accolades, including a Billboard Spotlight Award (currently the only female artist to have one), four Guinness World Records, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, a Brit Award, and a Juno Award.
Her acclaimed Super Bowl halftime show performance in 2015 is the most watched in history.
She is also the second most-followed woman and the fifth most-followed person on Twitter, with over 108 million followers.
Quite a resume, wouldn’t you agree?
When she sings, millions listen.
When she speaks, millions listen as well, making her voice on environmental issues powerful as ever.
Fortunately Katy has strong passionate allies trying to make a difference as well.
