June 22, 2023,
Is it preferable?
It depends. On what?
On you.
Some people virtually never keep things simple and yet, in their fantasy realm, they feel that what they are doing, is the right thing to do.
Who are people who tend to keep things complicated? They do have tendencies. Can we share our personal experiences? Appreciate your permission.
They are lazy and want something for nothing.
They are deceptive and treacherous.
They are often hiding something.
They are wicked and evil.
In leadership roles, they play politics.
They are corrupt.
They are jealous of you.
Is that enough?
Well, that was good for us.
People who keep things simple? In our experience?
They are honest.
They work hard.
They are not selfish.
They care about others.
They save their money so they don’t have to be a burden upon someone else.
They are raised with strong ethical values.
They like things to happen fairly quickly. Let’s get from point A to B.
Something like that.
What characteristics best describe you?
There are examples of keeping things simple on film.
Cast Away is a 2000 American survival drama film directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, and Nick Searcy.
Tom Hanks plays a FedEx troubleshooter who is stranded on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes in the South Pacific, and the plot focuses on his desperate attempts to survive and return home.
Time to delve deeper into the storyline.
Chuck Noland is a FedEx systems analyst and executive who travels the world resolving productivity problems.
He lives with his girlfriend, Kelly Frears in Memphis, Tennessee.
During a Christmas dinner, where family tease Kelly and Chuck about if they will ever finally get married, Chuck is summoned to resolve a problem in Malaysia.
Before leaving, Kelly gifts Chuck her grandfather’s pocket watch with a photo of her in it. Chuck gifts her a small box, saying she can wait to open it when he returns.
Very symbolic and ironic. Agree?
It is implied it is an engagement ring.
However, the FedEx cargo plane he is on gets caught in a storm and crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Chuck is the only survivor of the crash and escapes on an inflatable life raft, losing the emergency locator transmitter in the process.
The next day, he washes up on an uninhabited island.
The film grossed $429 million worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2000.
Tom Hanks’s performance won him Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama at the 58th Golden Globe Awards and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 73rd Academy Awards.
Very impressive.
Hmm, alone on an island.
Okay, we agree that is keeping things a little too simple. About as simple as it gets. But hey, look at how much money the movie grossed?
In all fairness, that is the power of the story. What is your internal makeup in that situation? Your fortitude? Your endurance? Your character? Your will to survive?
As we stated earlier. In our experience, people who approach life with honesty and character develop strong internal fortitude.
We can appreciate that.
Those qualities are really important in maintaining a long term relationship or marriage.
Keep things simple.
Be true to one another. Contribute positive things to the relationship. Be happy with the simple gifts of family life.
Like Tom Hanks character on that island, keep things simple and be in the struggle, mostly positive, for the rest of your life.
That was mostly our view. We always love to get a second opinion.
That was about family. Next let’s view it from a business standpoint.
Time to go over to the bookstore.
Why Simple Wins: Escape the Complexity Trap and Get to Work That Matters 1st Edition
By Lisa Bodell (Author)
“Imagine what you could do with the time you spend writing emails every day. Complexity is killing companies’ ability to innovate and adapt, and simplicity is fast becoming the competitive advantage of our time. Why Simple Wins helps leaders and their teams move beyond the feelings of frustration and futility that come with so much unproductive work in today’s corporate world to create a corporate culture where valuable, essential, meaningful work is the norm.
By learning how to eliminate redundancies, communicate with clarity, and make simplification a habit, individuals and companies can begin to recognize which activities are time-sucks and which create lasting value. Lisa Bodell’s simplification method has several unique principles: Simplification is a skill that’s available to us all, yet very few leaders use it. Simplification is the right thing to do–for our customers, for our company, and for each other.
Operating with simplification as our core business model will make it easier to be respectful of each other’s time. Simplification drives culture, and culture in turn drives employee engagement, customer relations, and overall productivity.
This book is inspired by Bodell’s passion for eliminating barriers to innovation and productivity. In it, she explains why change and innovation are so hard to achieve–and it’s not what you might expect. The reality is this: we spend our days drowning in mundane tasks like meetings, emails, and reports.
These are often self-created complexities that prevent us from getting to the meaningful work that truly matters. Using simple stories and techniques, Why Simple Wins shows that by using simplicity as an operating principle, we can eliminate the busy work that puts a chokehold on us every day, and instead spend time on the work that we value.”
Very good. Family. Work. Love. Keep it simple.
Finally, the most important area to keep things simple is your personal life. One friend likes to call it focusing on the big three.
Health.
It is extremely important to keep working on your fitness. Go for walks, exercise at home and work out at the gym. This is vital. Make it into a habit. Start very young.
Eating habits.
Physical exercise is very helpful but you negate much of it if you eat fast foods and too much sugar. Find the balance. Salads, sugar free drinks, lots of water, tons of oatmeal (one friend eats it raw, like potato chips) and fish. Can’t get enough vitamin A.
Then there is your spiritual and emotional health.
Take time for that.
Go to the beach or the mountains. Take some time to get away and reflect.
Life will be better for you.
Especially when you keep things simple.
