July 29, 2023,
Someone has to look at the bigger picture.
For the greater good.
And who is that?
The adult in the room.
Does that describe you?
Who is the adult in the room?
When you think about the most basic term, it would be the parents with their children. In terms of behavior, the parent has to take the higher ground. Have the higher standards.
If you admonish your children not to swear, you should set the example by not using profanity yourself.
The family is the most basic unit, but as we age, we are part of myriads of groups.
Being the adult in the room means, in a positive and unselfish way, you do what is in the best interest of the group, even if it adversely affects your own interests.
In the family circle, one of the most obvious situations to avoid, is committing adultery, knowing that your spouse, children and in-laws might find out and be adversely affected. It could permanently ruin your relationships.
You may desire the pleasure and emotional needs of an illicit relationship but, always keep in mind, you are putting yourself first, above all others.
Now, that is just us. Time to see what others say.
We’ll start at simple and go to more expansive.
Regarding the phrase, “adult in the room”; the group at idiomwizard.com share, “Most responsible person, especially among combative groups. The phrase suggests that others in a group are acting like children and it requires one person to be the adult and keep a semblance of decorum.”
Seems logical.
Now, for another.
The team at medium.com, “When you think of a great boss, chances are you think of a great leader. Someone who inspires her subordinates with only a few words, who shows them the way without pushing them towards a precipice, who gets the results she expects without micromanaging.”
Makes perfect sense.
Time for a personal experience.
We know of an associate who was married with two children in the home. At some point, his wife threatened him, if he doesn’t buy a bigger home, she will divorce him.
He thought deeply about what she said.
Their home was stable and a fire fight with her would destabilize it. She had evolved into a completely selfish person, not caring what that decision would do to their finances or how her children would be affected without their father in the home.
He saw things from a different angle. If they divorce, his former wife would most likely bring male lovers into the home and his teen aged daughter could possibly get raped.
He knew of a situation in his current neighborhood where one of his female neighbors was raped at fifteen. In the present, she is extremely angry and eccentric. So much so the other neighbors know it.
Too, he had high goals for his children’s future in terms of college achievement, far higher than average, so he needed to be in the home to ensure that they achieve it. He turned down a big promotion so he could coach his daughter, who eventually became a city champion.
Being the adult in the room means placing your children’s interests above your own personal ambitions.
He caved in and bought the larger home, which eventually led to financial ruin, but at least by then, the children were gone and both achieved Masters’ degrees from prestigious universities.
When his wife made that vile threat, he had to be the adult in the room and look out for the best interest of the children, even though he knew he would lose a substantial amount of money.
In the larger picture, civilizations greatly depend upon leaders who act like the adult in the room, by putting the interest of the nation above their own personal ambitions.
The ramifications for not doing so can be massive.
Movies can tell a powerful story, especially if they are based upon true events.
Breach is a 2007 American spy thriller film directed by Billy Ray, who wrote the screenplay with Adam Mazer and William Rotko.
The film is based on the true story of Robert Hanssen, an FBI agent convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and later Russia for more than two decades.
An argument could be made, unbelievable and incredibly selfish.
The movie stars Chris Cooper as Hanssen and Ryan Phillippe as Eric O’Neill, the FBI Investigator who helped bring about his downfall.
The basic storyline.
Eric O’Neill is a young ambitious FBI employee assigned to work undercover as a clerk to Robert Hanssen, a senior agent.
The film received generally positive reviews and grossed $41 million on a $23 million budget.
We can see why it received positive reviews.
We were enthralled by it, in part because we were astonished at how someone could betray his country so badly, possibly exposing undercover agents in foreign countries who eventually could be murdered.
And for what?
A bigger house?
A nicer car?
Shopping sprees for his wife?
Would you say it speaks to incredible selfishness at the expense of a nation?
Going to the source, at fbi.gov who educate, “On January 12, 1976, Robert Philip Hanssen swore an oath to enforce the law and protect the nation as a newly minted FBI special agent. Instead, he ultimately became the most damaging spy in Bureau history.
On February 18, 2001, Hanssen was arrested and charged with committing espionage on behalf of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Hanssen—using the alias “Ramon Garcia” with his Russian handlers—had provided highly classified national security information to the Russians in exchange for more than $1.4 million in cash, bank funds, and diamonds.”
Very sad.
Being the adult in the room means taking the high road, behaving in a mature ethical manner but above all placing the welfare and needs of the group you are associated with above your own. It means, imperfect though you may be, you strive for higher principles and standards.
You do not return evil for evil.
The huge question, in a time period where so many behave in ways that are amoral, is it worth doing so?
You’ve heard of the expression, look out for number one?
That phrase clearly originated from someone who did not behave like the adult in the room.
When you behave like the adult in the room, a strong argument could be made, you greatly benefit others, in your unwritten and often written contract that you have with them.
