August 3, 2023,
You need to slow down.
Think things through.
Do not act so quickly.
Why?
Because, in this situation, if you make a mistake, it could literally change your life and not in the way you want it to.
That is why you need to apply discernment before you act.
Discernment can be defined as the ability to perceive, understand, and judge things clearly, especially those that are not obvious or straightforward.
In the complicated, often corrupt and dangerous world we live in now, self-control and discernment should go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Maybe some examples might help. We love turning to film which often tell tales that provide exceptional life lessons.
The film entitled, The Best Offer, or Deception in the UK, is a 2013 Australian-English-language Italian psychological thriller film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore.
The film stars Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Sylvia Hoeks, and Donald Sutherland.
Here is the storyline.
The film tells a story of love and deceit, set in Europe – in the world of ultra high-end art auctions and antiques.
The story revolves around Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush), an ageing, wealthy, and esteemed, but somewhat standoffish and eccentric, managing director of a preeminent auction house. Oldman is hired by a mysterious young heiress, Claire Ibbetson (Sylvia Hoeks), to auction off the large collection of art and antiques left to her by her parents.
Here is where his antenna should have shot up.
Claire always refuses to be seen in person, suffering from severe agoraphobia and never leaving her room.
Right.
One of the things we learned in life is when something that should be simple, is made complicated, there is a reason for it and usually not a good one.
For repetition, if you find yourself in a situation, that should be very simple to move forward in and yet a person or group makes it far more complicated than it should be, use discernment to find out why.
Discernment should be carefully applied when speaking to other people’s motivation.
Here are situations in everyday life, which at times, may ask that you pause before leaping in.
Buying a used car from a private party or dealer.
Accepting an offer from a company that may be engaging in false advertising. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Finding yourself in the middle of a conflict between other people. Possibly family members. Who is telling you the truth?
Your loved one is gone a lot at odd hours or are always going out of town. Without being paranoid, ask yourself the question, why?
Your love interest is slow in returning your phone calls. Ask yourself why?
Politics has become a very ugly and dangerous business today. Propositions can be confusing. Do your homework and research to find out how you should vote. Don’t just leave it to online Podcasts or television media to help you make a decision. While they can be helpful, it is possible that have their own hidden agenda.
We like to gather information from a variety of sources.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore. This book sounds intriguing.
Responsibility and Judgment Paperback – August 9, 2005
By Hannah Arendt (Author)
Responsibility and Judgment gathers together unpublished writings from the last decade of Arendt’s life, where she addresses fundamental questions and concerns about the nature of evil and the making of moral choices.
At the heart of the book is a profound ethical investigation, “Some Questions of Moral Philosophy,” in which Arendt confronts the inadequacy of traditional moral “truths” as standards to judge what we are capable of doing and examines anew our ability to distinguish good from evil and right from wrong.
We also see how Arendt comes to understand that alongside the radical evil she had addressed in earlier analyses of totalitarianism, there exists a more pernicious evil, independent of political ideology, whose execution is limitless when the perpetrator feels no remorse and can forget his acts as soon as they are committed.
Responsibility and Judgment is an indispensable investigation into some of the most troubling and important issues of our time.”
Given how complicated the modern world has become, where so often it is hard to tell who is good and who is not, what is true, what is not, research and discernment is important.
In times past, our institutions like family, schools and religion helped us form many of our values and judgements. Now they are not what they used to be and some have proved false.
One of the most important areas where you need to use discernment is joining a religion. Based upon our at times horrific experience, where so much of your youth can be lost getting heavily involved in a religion that demands so much of your time and money, can in the long-term destroy, your life.
Use discernment as to how deeply and how far you want to participate.
We would suggest a book for you to read on discernment but virtually all of them point to a Biblical definition of it, which is fine, but in our experience it is very hard to discern who the God they describe is.
That is a huge challenge.
Does anyone really know who the creator of this earth is?
You can listen to a number of Spiritual Leaders and organizations explain to you who they think God is, as we did, but is it possible that no one really knows?
Our point is, while it may be good to use the Bible as a guide, when it comes to the application from man, use great discernment.
It can be very difficult to navigate the world that we live in. Keeping high standards, behaving with integrity, without being foolish, being honest and treating others the way you would like to be treated, is a good start.
Don’t let the world change you in a bad way.
Still, when it comes to the behaviors of people and organizations, it is important to not be paralyzed but don’t be impetuous either.
Perhaps use the dictionary definition of self-control and researched decision making to help you discern the right decision to make, or path to take, is one methodology to use for now.
Until you find a better one.
