August 10, 2023,
Certain truths are self-evident.
All men are created equal. Well, we know darn well that’s not true.
Maybe try another one.
Rabbits love carrots.
People love having rabbits for pets.
People love dining on rabbits with carrots.
No, no, no. Let’s try again.
People fall in love. People fall down when they are in love.
Love means never having to say you’re sorry.
Wait.
The last one is not self-evident. Maybe that thought was from a movie.
Okay, let’s find something that is truly self-evident.
One thing we have researched and noticed to be self-evident is that, with billions of people on this planet, most of us will be born, live and die, with few knowing who we are, who we were, or what we did in life, except family and friends.
Is that what you want?
Will that be your fate?
If you want something more than that, you can do something to change that. How?
By working on a pathway that will make you standout above the crowd. Working a 9-5 job will not get you there. You have to create or do something unique, which gets people’s attention. Takes risks, forge new pathways.
You have to take risks.
You have to put yourself out there.
Let’s go to the movies for some examples.
Lidia Poët was the first modern female Italian lawyer. Her disbarment led to a movement to allow women to practice law and hold public office in Italy. That on the surface is a very intriguing story.
Netflix turned it into a series titled, The Law According To Lidia Poet.
Here is their introduction. “In this gripping period drama, Lidia Poët investigates murders while fighting to practice law. Inspired by the true story of Italy’s first female lawyer.”
Okay, you have our attention.
The team at imdb.com continue, “In late 19th-century Turin, the young Lidia Poët, fights against everything and everyone to get what is rightfully hers: to be enrolled in the official register of lawyers. A profession, at the time, reserved exclusively for men. Nevertheless, nothing could stop her dream of becoming the first female lawyer in Italy.”
Here is one online review.
“Wow, more please from Matilda De Angelis, what a fabulous actress. Expressions speak louder than words. Based on a true story, we forget how long, and damn hard, women have battled for basic human rights. An exceptionally great Italian series. I choose the English dubbed version, the storyline was so engaging I hardly noticed.” We’re convinced. Let’s look at another.
Colette is a 2018 biographical drama film directed by Wash Westmoreland, from a screenplay by Westmoreland, Rebecca Lenkiewicz and Richard Glatzer, based upon the life of the French novelist Colette.
It stars Keira Knightley, Dominic West, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denise Gough.
As usual, Keira Knightley is sensational.
It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2018.
Here is the storyline.
Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is a young woman from the rural Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye at the end of the 19th century, who begins an affair with Willy.
Willy eventually brings Colette to Paris as his bride, with socialites expressing surprise a libertine like him would marry. Willy refers to himself as a “literary entrepreneur”, employing a number of ghostwriters to write articles. However, he finds the limited output does not bring in enough revenue to cover his expenses, due to his expensive lifestyle entertaining socialites.
He commissions one ghostwriter to work on a novel while Colette manages his correspondence.
One day, Colette finds Willy with a prostitute, leading to a separation. He eventually persuades her to return, promising honesty.
Colette also tells him of her days as a schoolgirl. A very extensive and personal experience.
With Willy increasingly unable to pay his writers, he asks Colette to write a novel based on her school stories. She completes a draft of Claudine à l’école, which Willy rejects for lacking plot.
Years later, some of Willy’s furniture is repossessed, and he stumbles on the draft.
No matter the time period, some people, who make good money, have no idea or the self-control to manage it properly. It is shameful.
He suggests revisions and the novel is submitted and published under Willy’s byline.
Claudine à l’école becomes a bestseller, particularly attracting a female readership.
Faced with his first true hit, Willy tells his publisher a sequel is coming, purchases a country house, and locks Colette in a room there to force her to write. Initially objecting, Colette writes Claudine à Paris, which becomes another bestseller.
Mercifully it is such a different world for women today.
Initially objecting, Colette writes Claudine à Paris, which becomes another bestseller.
The plot thickens.
As Colette and Willy become an increasingly recognized couple, she attracts the notice of Georgie Raoul-Duval, a Louisiana debutante, and they begin an affair.
Jealous, Willy also begins an affair with Georgie. Colette discovers this, and bases her next book, Claudine en ménage, on the relationship.
Fearing scandal, Georgie’s husband purchases and burns all copies of the book before sale, but does not purchase the copyright, allowing Willy to reprint and sell the book.
This is a penetrating story, and as you might guess, at some point Colette needs to get rid of this parasite. It isn’t easy but she eventually does.
Then makes history.
We loved this powerful tale about how a woman, in a very restricted time period, does not let the obstacles to greatness defeat her.
We now live in a time period where anything is possible.
The internet and the Social Media connects you to millions around the world. If you develop a product or idea, you get great exposure for pennies. There are so many young women who have followers and subscribers and are making millions of dollars promoting their brand.
Why not you?
Time periods come and go. Generally speaking, we all have a chance to make our mark. To stand out in the crowd.
To achieve something where history will remember us.
What will be your path to greatness?
