August 22, 2023,
Timeless is a description that absolutely applies.
There are some other accolades that apply as well.
Masterpiece.
One of the best horror films ever.
It keeps you holding your breath.
Alien is a classic 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O’Bannon.
Based on a story by O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who, after coming across a mysterious derelict spaceship on an uncharted planetoid, find themselves up against an aggressive and deadly extraterrestrial set loose on the ship.
The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto.
Critical reassessment has resulted in Alien being widely considered one of the greatest and most influential science fiction and horror films of all time.
We completely agree.
In 2002, Alien was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
Deservedly so.
Timeless indeed. Time has a way of placing things in perspective.
If you have not seen this film, and you love horror, you should absolutely watch it.
If you were there, here is the tagline that resonates, “In space, no one can hear you scream”.
And you know what?
For some, perhaps many, Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency, and cyberspace appears to be that way.
A cryptocurrency, is a digital currency designed to work as a medium of exchange through a computer network that is not reliant on any central authority, such as a government or bank, to uphold or maintain it.
No bank?
No government?
In cyberspace, if you are financially attacked, no one can hear you scream.
Bitcoin is a protocol which implements a public, permanent, and decentralized ledger.
Bitcoin transactions are verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain.
Bitcoin is a digital asset designed to work in peer-to-peer transactions as a currency.
The cryptocurrency was invented in 2008 by an unknown person or group of people using the name Satoshi Nakamoto.
Are you ready to start screaming?
Dish Network, a Fortune 500 subscription TV provider, has been described as the first large company to accept bitcoin, in 2014.
Time to look at recent news.
The informative financial source money.com shares, “Bitcoin mining can be profitable if you invest in the right tools and join a bitcoin mining pool. That said, there are a lot of variables, and a high profit isn’t guaranteed. Mining isn’t for everyone.”
True that.
Still, it is for many.
The team at bankrate.com expand, “If a miner is able to successfully add a block to the blockchain, they will receive 6.25 bitcoins as a reward. The reward amount is cut in half roughly every four years, or every 210,000 blocks. As of March 2023, Bitcoin traded at around $24,300, making 6.25 bitcoins worth $152,000.”
How is Bitcoin trending?
Bloomberg reported that the largest 17 crypto merchant-processing services handled $69 million in June 2018, down from $411 million in September 2017.
That’s quite a trend.
The Library of Congress reports that, as of November 2021, nine countries have fully banned bitcoin use, and a further forty-two have implicitly banned it.
Are people screaming in cyberspace? Perhaps. You just can’t hear them.
Bitcoin is “not actually usable” for retail transactions because of high costs and the inability to process chargebacks, according to Nicholas Weaver, a researcher quoted by Bloomberg.
High price volatility and transaction fees make paying for small retail purchases with bitcoin impractical, according to economist Kim Grauer.
However, bitcoin continues to be used for large-item purchases on sites such as Overstock.com, and for cross-border payments to freelancers and other vendors.
There is more, in a positive way.
In June 2021, the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador voted legislation to make bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador, alongside the US dollar. The law took effect on September 7, making El Salvador the first country to do so.
So, the Bitcoin story goes back and forth.
It is enough to space you out.
This documentary might shed some light. It is called Banking on Bitcoin.
At primevideo.com, they educate, “An ideological battle is underway between fringe utopists and mainstream capitalism. Banking on Bitcoin takes a look at what this revolutionary technology is and the players who are battling to define how it will shape our lives.”

We desire more.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore.
