September 15, 2023,
The four corners of the globe.
That is where professional women’s tennis takes you.
What can help a female tennis player along the way are tennis organizations that promotes the player’s interests.
The Kazakhstan Tennis Federation is one such organization.
Have you heard of Kazakhstan?
Time for a visit.
Kazakhstan is a landlocked country located mainly in Central Asia and partly in Eastern Europe.
It borders Russia to the north and west, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan to the southeast, Uzbekistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest, with a coastline along the Caspian Sea.
Its capital is Astana, known as Nur-Sultan from 2019 to 2022.
Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, was the country’s capital until 1997.
Kazakhstan is the world’s ninth-largest country by land area and the largest landlocked country in the world.
That bears repeating.
Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country in the world.
The country has a population of 19 million people and one of the lowest population densities in the world, at fewer than 6 people per square mile.
Intriguing.
The world travelers at Lonely Planet have been there. Of course.
Here is their observation, “The world’s ninth-biggest country is the most economically advanced of the ‘stans’, thanks to its abundant reserves of oil and most other valuable minerals. That money has transformed the capital Nur-Sultan, on the windswept northern steppe, into a 21st-century showpiece with a profusion of bold futuristic architecture.”
They go on to speak about the wonderful restaurants, fine accommodations and abundance of city greenery.
Speaking of wonderful restaurants, let’s sip at their cuisine.
In the national cuisine, livestock meat, like horse meat and beef can be cooked in a variety of ways and is usually served with a wide assortment of traditional bread products.
For some Americans, eating horse meat may take some getting used to.
Refreshments include black tea, often served with milk and dried fruits (such as dried apricots) and nuts. In southern provinces, people often prefer green tea.
Traditional milk-derived drinks such as ayran, shubat and kymyz. A traditional Kazakh dinner involves a multitude of appetizers on the table, followed by a soup and one or two main courses such as pilaf and beshbarmak. They also drink their national beverage, kumys, which consists of fermented mare’s milk.
It is a little different from the West.
Once you traverse beyond the cities, you’ll open yourself up to some great travel adventures.
Try hiking in the high mountains and green valleys of the Tian Shan, searching for wildlife on the lake-dotted steppe, enjoy local hospitality in village guest houses, or experience the western deserts and remote underground mosques.
The team at kazakhstan.travel add, “In our globalized era, when travel destinations are becoming increasingly similar, many travelers are looking for something authentic and unusual. Kazakhstan, with its unique culture, rich history and vast unexplored areas, is definitely worth discovering.
Towering mountain ranges, vast flat steppes, green valleys, sprawling deserts, deep canyons, and turquoise lakes – Kazakhstan has everything to stun even the most experienced traveler.”
Kazakhstan consistently performs in Olympic competitions. It is especially successful in boxing. This has brought some attention to the Central Asian nation and increased world awareness of its athletes. Dmitry Karpov and Olga Rypakova are among the most notable Kazakhstani athlete.
Now, thanks to the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, they are being known globally for tennis as well.
One of the players who has benefited from their help is Anna Danilina.
Anna is a Russian-born Kazakhstani tennis player, primarily with a focus on doubles.
She has been ranked as high as No. 10 in doubles by the WTA.
In singles, she reached a career-high ranking of No. 269. She is a Grand Slam mixed doubles champion, having won the US Open in 2023 together with Harri Heliövaara.
Huge congrats on that one.
Anna represented Russia, her nation of birth, until March 2011 when she switched allegiances to represent Kazakhstan.
Along with Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, Danilina attained her Grand Slam doubles breakthrough, reaching the women’s doubles final of the 2022 Australian Open.
Now, she has another breakthrough. Read all about it.
