September 23, 2023,
Defeating the legendary Serena Williams to win the US Open is a spectacular way to introduce yourself to the tennis world.
Defeating her at a previous tournament as well, announces that you are a player to be watched.
Bianca Andreescu was the champion at the US Open and the Canadian Open in 2019, defeating Serena Williams to win both titles.
On the professional tennis tour, 2019 seems a lifetime ago.
We remember watching that historic match and how Bianca played so flawlessly. We thought she would be a big time player for years to come.
As a result of that, and other great accomplishments, on October 21, 2019, Bianca reached a stunning personal high ranking of number 4.
As of this September 23, 2023 writing, Bianca is ranked number 44.
In Bianca’s quest to get back to the top, it has been a long, intriguing and intense journey.
Bianca is a Canadian professional tennis player.
Drum roll please.
She is the first Canadian tennis player to win a major singles title, and the first to win the Canadian Open in 50 years. She was also the first player to win a major singles title as a teenager since Maria Sharapova in 2006.
That is incredibly impressive.
Time for a little history.
Bianca began playing tennis in her parents’ home country of Romania before returning to Canada, the country of her birth.
A little more on that.
Her parents emigrated from Romania to Canada in 1994 when her father accepted a job in the country. Bianca’s father works as a mechanical engineer at an automotive company, while her mother had worked at a bank in Romania. Her family moved back to Romania when Bianca was six years old so that her mother could start a business in their home country. After two and a half years, they closed the business and returned to Canada.
In time, her ascent in tennis would begin.
She had success as a junior, winning the Orange Bowl and two major doubles titles with compatriot Carson Branstine in route to reaching a career-best junior ranking of No. 3 in the world.
After not playing any matches at the WTA Tour level in 2018, Bianca had a breakout year in 2019, beginning with a runner-up in her first event of the season, the Auckland Open.
She then rose to prominence by winning the Indian Wells Open, a Premier Mandatory tournament.
Then would come a recurring theme.
Nagging injuries.
Although she missed several months due to injury, Bianca qualified for the WTA Finals at the end of the season and finished the year ranked No. 5.
So, why is she currently ranked number 44? We didn’t see her play at this year’s 2023 US Open.
What has been going on?
It all seemed to start in the 2020-2021 season.
Bianca missed the first few months of the 2020 season, including the Australian Open, due to her knee injury. She was unable to defend her title at the Indian Wells Open until the tournament and the next several months of the season were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our luminary returned to competition for the first time in 15 months at the 2021 Australian Open, the first major tournament since her run at the 2019 US Open.
Think about it, 15 long months.
Things were up and down.
Seeded eighth, she opened with a three-set victory over Mihaela Buzărnescu in the first round but then was upset by Hsieh Su-wei in straight sets. She also participated in the Phillip Island Trophy, another new event in Australia, where she lost in the semifinals to Marie Bouzková.
Bianca tested positive for COVID-19 on April 25, 2021 and was forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open.
She went into the French Open as the sixth seed, however she was upset in the first round by Tamara Zidanšek.
Most recently, Bianca had to pull out of the 2023 US Open due to a back injury.
Unfortunately for Bianca, she will have to wait for another year to make her coveted US Open main draw appearance.
We can’t wait.
When Bianca had her incredible 2019 run, we loved her passion, fierce playing style and incredible laser like line shots.
Let’s look at her playing style that has enthralled many.
Bianca employs a wide variety of shots into her style of play that is set apart by the level of power she incorporates into her game. Martina Navratilova in particular has noted, “Everyone knows how to bang the ball; it’s when you bring something extra to the table that it makes all the difference, and Andreescu brings a lot of extra to the table.”
High praise indeed.
More praise is coming.
She rarely hits two shots in a row in the same way, and her opponents can find it difficult to read her shots.
The power and variety in her style have received wide praise as both entertaining and effective. Former world No. 1 Tracy Austin, Sportsnet Canada, and The Wall Street Journal all have stated Bianca is “fun to watch”.
We absolutely agree.
More.
Bianca has multiple options with her forehand, including hitting it flat, with slice, or with heavy topspin to push her opponents further back behind the baseline.
She also has multiple options with her two-handed backhand, and is capable of hitting it flat at sharp angles, with power, or one-handed with slice.
The result of that arsenal?
Bianca can hit large numbers of winners, most of which are typically from the forehand side. She hit 19 winners in the 2019 US Open final and 44 in the 2019 Indian Wells final, 37 of which were forehand winners
So, now we watch and wait.
We hope her back heals up soon. Power hitters are always fascinating to watch.
Online research indicates she has been regularly practicing a form of meditation called creative visualization since she was 12 years old. She also practices yoga.
Hopefully that will help.
Bianca made an incredible global statement in 2019.
The tennis world is waiting for her return pronouncement in 2024.
