October 16, 2023,
Her expressions do not tell you a lot about what she is thinking, but you know Karolina Muchova is deep in thought.
Full of strategic ideas.
There is a penetrating and somewhat intimidating silence to her play.
Her deep run at the 2023 US Open seemed to speak to that.
Very effectively.
She took on all comers including the number 30th ranked player in Romania’s Sorana Cirstea and American favorite, Taylor Townsend, and sent them both packing in just 2 sets.
If you have not heard or read much about her before, you should get to know her now.
Karolína Muchová is a Czech professional tennis player with a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10, achieved on August 21, 2023.
That ranking should improve after her surge at the 2023 US Open where she competed into the quarter finals.
Karolina has reached four finals on the WTA Tour, including the 2023 French Open final, and won one title at the Korea Open in 2019.
Given how long players are competing these days, at just 27, she has lots of tennis ahead of her.
A little history.
Karolina turned professional in 2013.
She first rose to prominence at the 2018 US Open, defeating world No. 12 and two-time major champion Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round.
How quickly the public can forget.
The following year, Karolina reached her first major quarterfinal at Wimbledon by upsetting world No. 3 and tournament favorite Karolína Plíšková.
At the 2021 Australian Open, she reached the semifinals by defeating world No. 1 and home favorite Ashleigh Barty, but then lost to Jennifer Brady.
At the 2023 French Open, she reached her first major final by defeating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in a close fought semifinal, finishing runner-up to world No. 1 Iga Świątek.
She packs quite a resume. Quietly.
Let’s visit the village that helped raise her.
Karolína was born on August 21, 1996 in Olomouc.
Olomouc is a city in the Czech Republic with approximately 102,000 inhabitants, and its larger urban zone has a population of about 384,000 inhabitants as of 2019.
We’re thinking James Bond, Casino Royale.
Located on the Morava River, the city is the ecclesiastical metropolis and was a historical co-capital city of Moravia, before having been occupied by the Swedish army during the Thirty Years’ War.
Today, it is the administrative center of the Olomouc Region and the sixth largest city in the Czech Republic.
The historic city center is well preserved and is protected by law as urban monument reservation.
Since there were tennis courts near her home, she decided to pick up a tennis racket, and then when she was about 12, she chose tennis over handball. In 2019, she moved to Prague to train.
Great decision.
Fascinating.
So is Karolina’s playing style, which can be hard to figure out, in terms of why she is performing so well.
Karolina is an aggressive all-court player, possessing an intelligent game with exceptional variety.
She has powerful groundstrokes from both wings, using both her forehand and backhand to hit winners from any position on the court.
Variety is the spice of life.
She has been praised for her ability to incorporate softer shots, such as drop shots, lobs, and sliced backhands, into her game, constantly breaking up the pace of baseline rallies, and being able to hit winners with these typically defensive shots.
Karolina had to use that all court game when she faced the American Taylor Townsend, who epitomizes the unusual playing style including a great net game.
Many had picked Taylor in an upset, as previously, she had played so well, including upsetting Brazil’s number 19 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in straights.
That was a special feat.
Beatriz reached a career-high in the WTA rankings at world No. 10 in singles on June 12, 2023.
A rising star, she became the first Brazilian woman to enter the top 10 in singles since the rankings were introduced. She won two singles and five doubles titles on the WTA Tour, one singles and doubles title each on the WTA Challenger Tour, as well as 17 singles and nine doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.
Playing for Brazil Fed Cup team, our star has a win–loss record of 26–11 as of June 2023.
So when Karolina faced Taylor, before the American’s home crowd, there was a buzz in the air that Karolina muted with a hard fought victory. Taylor has a reputation for being a giant slayer at the US Open, as the then number 4 player in the world, Simona Halep, found out the hard way during the second round of the 2019 US Open tournament.
Karolina put on an amazing display.
She possesses a strong serve, with her first serve peaking at 110 mph and averaging 103 mph, allowing her to serve aces frequently. In addition, she also possesses a second serve that demonstrates a high amount of topspin, meaning that it can be deployed effectively without being attacked by aggressive players.
Then there is her movement.
Her footwork, speed, and anticipation allow her to be one of the strongest return players on the WTA Tour. As a result of her exemplary fitness, she is capable of sustaining long rallies, and is an effective counterpuncher, extending rallies until she can create an opportunity to hit a winner.
She did that incredibly well against Taylor with some superb passing shots.
Her achievements have come to the attention of those in high and lucrative places.
Karolina is sponsored by Adidas for her attire and by Head for her rackets.
Given her sterling performance at the 2023 Open, Karolina is going to rise in the rankings as well. Part of the importance of that is, it will get you better draws in the early rounds of the next Grand Slam, the 2024 Australian Open.
Keep an eye on Karolina Muchova.
And while it is hard to tell what Karolina is thinking, we know what we are thinking.
Karolina Muchova is a super star tennis player on the rise.
