October 25, 2023,
If you are already a top high profile athlete, is more television exposure better or worse, especially when it involves your private life, and arguably, may not help you win anything?
The French tennis star Caroline Garcia has appeared on Netflix. Maybe she should look to the NFL for a comparison.
Hard Knocks is a reality sports documentary television series produced by NFL Films and HBO.
First broadcast in 2001, the show typically follows a National Football League (NFL) team through its training camp and covers the team’s preparation for the upcoming football season.
The series depicts the personal and professional lives of players, coaches, and staff, including their family life, position battles, and even inside jokes and pranks. It particularly focuses on rookies‘ adjustments to playing in the NFL, usually with emphasis on the team’s most recent top draft pick.
It usually also chooses to focus on undrafted and journeyman players who are attempting to make the team.
Beginning in 2021, the show has also dedicated an additional season of television to following an additional team throughout the NFL regular season.
Interesting. An additional season added. Must be working, right?
For the NFL, most likely yes. What about for the team involved?
According to online research, no NFL team which has appeared on Hard Knocks has ever reached the Super Bowl.
The New York Jets were most recently on Hard Knocks.
The informative sports source sportsline.com confirms, “The Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, which is the NFL’s longest drought, and also the last time they were on Hard Knocks. They haven’t won the AFC East since 2002, with only Detroit and Cleveland holding a longer division title droughts in the league.”
So, how are the Jets faring this year?
It was the injury heard around the sports world, when on opening night, against the Buffalo Bills, star quarterback Aaron Rodgers was lost for the season with an Achilles injury.
Having said all of that, we watched Caroline Garcia have her life followed on Netflix and we wondered to ourselves, is this really a good idea?
Caroline appears to think so.
As reported by tennismajors.com, “Garcia also felt relaxed enough to agree to be followed by Netflix’s cameras as part of the second season of Break Point, the new drama aimed at bringing new people to tennis in the same way “Drive to Survive” has done for Formula 1.”
Or Hard Knocks for the NFL.
So, more about Break Point.
Break Point is a documentary series produced in a collaboration between Netflix, Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) to give a behind-the-scenes look at the players and tournaments of the ATP Tour and WTA Tour.
Could more public exposure, in a humanizing way lead to more tickets sales, television viewers and player endorsements?
The first part consisting of five episodes and focusing on the Australian Open, Indian Wells Masters, Madrid Open, and French Open was released on January 13, 2023, while the second part consisting of five episodes and focusing on Wimbledon, Eastbourne International, Queen’s Club, U.S. Open, WTA Finals, and ATP Finals was released on June 21, 2023.
How are things going with the series?
In March 2023, the series was renewed for a second season.
We can understand why Netflix would want to feature Caroline. She has an incredible resume.
In 2018, our associates at Femcometitor Magazine (femcompetitor.com) had this to say about our TV star and tennis player extraordinaire, “She loves her mother’s tiramisu and millefeuille.
Do you know what they are?
Shall we have a taste?
The mille-feuille vanilla slice or custard slice, also known as the Napoleon, is a French pastry whose exact origin is unknown. Its modern form was influenced by improvements made by Marie-Antoine Carême.
Traditionally, a mille-feuille is made up of three layers of puff pastry (pâte feuilletée), alternating with two layers of pastry cream (crème pâtissière), but sometimes whipped cream or jam are substituted, when substituted with jam this is then called a Bavarian slice.
The enticing site bonappetit.com adds, “Millefeuille, the classic French pastry that consists of layers of razor-thin puff pastry and cream filling, is having a resurgence all across the country.
Translated to English, millefeuille (pronounced meel-foy) means one thousand sheets, layers, or leaves. It’s an old-school French pastry that’s airy, crispy, flaky, and decadent in all the right places.”
Yummy.”
Delicious.
More about that resume.
According to wtatennis.com, as of this October 25, 2023 writing, Caroline is ranked a powerful number twenty in the world.
Time to look at her incredible resume.
Caroline Garcia is a French professional tennis player who has a career high ranking of world No. 4 in singles and world No. 2 in doubles.
Caroline is the reigning WTA Finals singles champion.
The WTA Finals, formerly known as the WTA Tour Championships, is the season-ending championship of the WTA Tour.
It is the most significant tennis event in the women’s annual calendar after the four majors, as it features the top eight singles players based on their results throughout the season.
Caroline, no doubt, was playing in championship form.
In singles, Garcia has won eleven WTA Tour singles titles, including three at the WTA 1000 level: the 2017 Wuhan Open, 2017 China Open and 2022 Cincinnati Open.
She achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 4 in both September 2018 and November 2022, the latter after winning the above described WTA Finals.
Caroline has represented France in the Billie Jean King Cup since 2013, and was part of the team that won the title in 2019.
She won a Fed Cup Heart Award in 2016 for her role in leading France to its first final in eleven years. She has also twice competed for France at the Olympics.
Netflix should be proud.
And to think, in 2021, when Caroline was struggling with her form, she was ranked at number 74.
What a meteoric rise to get to where she is today.
Recently, Caroline played at the WTA 1000 2023 Guadalajara Open Akron where she reached the semifinals defeating tenth seed Viktoria Azarenka.
And she plays with style.
Caroline is an offensive baseliner, with consistent and powerful groundstrokes, and a strong service game.
Her forehand is her stronger wing, and she can hit many clean winners off it. She also possesses a consistent and strong two-handed backhand.
She also has a strong first and second serve, known for its accuracy. She served the ninth most aces in 2016, with 218.
She has good movement and footwork around the court, which help her with hitting her groundstrokes effectively.
Style and great results.
Now, about that TV show.
We have come to the conclusion, whether it is on Netflix or television, while she is playing in the Grand Slams especially, Caroline Garcia is must see TV.
