November 1, 2023,
One of the most popular and elite players on the women’s professional tennis tour just got more popular and is playing at an even higher level.
America’s Jessica Pegula is having an amazing run at the WTA Finals.
Lets’ go right to the source.
According to the informative WTA website, “Jessica Pegula scored her third victory over a No.1 player this year with a definitive 6-4, 6-3 win against World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday at the GNP Seguros WTA Finals Cancun.”
Extremely impressive.
The WTA Finals, formerly known as the WTA Tour Championships or WTA Championships, is the season-ending championship of the WTA Tour.
It is the most significant tennis event in the women’s annual calendar after the four majors, as it features the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams based on their results throughout the season.
It is a fantastic way to cap off what has been a really great year.
The WTA Finals has the largest prize money and ranking points after the majors. The most successful player in both singles and doubles history is Martina Navratilova, with eight singles and 13 doubles titles.
In the tournament’s current format, the champion can earn a maximum of 1,500 ranking points, if they win the event as an undefeated champion in the round-robin stage.
Jessica has a chance to win it all.
Let’s take a closer look at the American super star.
Jessica has a career-high WTA rankings of world No. 3 in singles, achieved on October 24, 2022, and world No. 1 in doubles, achieved on September 11, 2023.
Our luminary has won four singles titles and seven doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including two WTA 1000 titles in each discipline.
Jessica is a six-time Major quarterfinalist in singles, having reached this stage at all four Grand Slam tournaments; thrice at the Australian Open (2021–2023), and once at the French Open (2022), US Open (2022), and Wimbledon (2023).
In doubles, she reached the women’s doubles final of the 2022 French Open partnering Coco Gauff and the mixed doubles final of the 2023 US Open with Austin Krajicek.
What an incredible resume.
The intriguing aspect to that is it hasn’t always been that way.
In 2019, here is what our associates at Femcompetitor Magazine (femcompetitor.com) had to say about her, “As of this August 16, 2019 writing, Jessica is ranked number 56 in the world. That is an all-time high. She truly is ascending. When you look at her professional tennis history, which began in 2009, it is intriguing that it took her ten years to crack the top 100.
In 2012 she rose to 147, only to see her rankings keep sliding until she was lodged at 632 in 2017.
Injuries have played a role in that but all professional tennis players have injuries and they seem to fight through them and when their window opens, make their move anyway.
For a long time, Jessica seemed not to.”
Well, that was then, and currently (October 31, 2023) ranked an elite number five in the world, this is now.
Having closely followed Jessica for some time, we wonder, when is she finally going to break through and win a Grand Slam? She certainly is capable of it. It has greatly eluded her. Given how she is playing in this year’s WTA championships, will the 2024 Australian Open be her crowning jewel?
We will be watching. You should too.
Jessica has such a great reputation, people in high places are noticing her.
Take a look.
