December 20, 2023,
Typically your retirement act, is not your second act.
Most likely your third.
If you are fortunate.
But when you are Serena Williams, only 43 years old and retired, perhaps change it around.
Your second act is indeed your retirement act.
For now.
The global super star continues to be busy. In retirement. If it makes it easy for you to label it that.
Just a reminder.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Serena was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times.
She won 23 Grand Slam women’s singles titles, the most in the Open Era, and the second-most of all time. She is the only player to accomplish a career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles.
Those stats will allow you to retire early yet keep busy working with sponsors.
And making tons of money in your retirement.
In the early 2000s, Serena wore Puma apparel and footwear on court.
She also signed a five-year endorsement deal with Nike in 2004 for $40 million, and has been endorsed by the company for clothing, apparel, and footwear ever since.
Now, that is one successful partnership.
Nike designs custom clothing for Ms. Williams, which she wears on the court along with custom footwear. The largest building on Nike’s Portland campus is the one million square foot Serena Williams Building which features many references to the athlete’s career and her long collaboration with Nike.
Virtually always involved, according to John Hoke, Nike’s Chief Design Officer, Serena made an important contribution to the creative process of the design of the building.
She used the Wilson Hammer Stretch range of racquets when she won her first Grand Slam title in 1999, before switching to the Hyper Hammer range.
Serena also has endorsement deals with AbbVie, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Aston Martin, AT&T, Audemars Piguet, Beats by Dre, Berlei Bras, Block Inc, Bumble, Chase Bank, Delta Air Lines, DirecTV, DoorDash, Ford Motor, Gatorade, Gucci, Hanes, IBM, Intel, Mission Athletecare, OnePiece, OPI Products, Pepsi, Subway, Tempur, Tonal and the Walt Disney Company.
Impressive.
Ready to go for a drive?
Now to autos.
In 2015, Serena became the CSO (Chief Sporting Officer) for British luxury automobile manufacturer Aston Martin.
James Bond would be proud.
She then posted her first experience on social media service Twitter, and said: “I’m loving my first day on the job as Chief Sporting Officer and Director of Fun!”, stating her optimism on the job as the CSO.
Serena is also on the board of directors at SurveyMonkey.
We’re impressed. So are others.
The informative source finance.yahoo.com shares, “Inactive but not retired, Serena Williams earns more of her income from endorsements than any other athlete on this list. Her top deals are with AbbVie, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Audemars Piguet, Block Inc, DIRECTV, Inc., Ford Motor, Gatorade, Gucci, Hanesbrands, Nike, Subway, Tonal and Wilson Sporting Goods.”
Inactive on the tour, that is. We knew we had left off a few of her other sponsors.
Forbes Magazine shares as well, “She is a cofounder of Will Perform, a startup that launched in December 2022 to create products for topical pain relief and muscle and skin care. In April 2023, she launched multimedia company Nine Two Six Productions to expand her efforts as a producer. She also made a cameo in the 2022 film “Glass Onion.””
Have you had a chance to catch your breath?
Let’s look at one more.
In August 2009, Serena and her sister Venus became minority owners of the Miami Dolphins after purchasing a small stake in the team. They live near each other in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, which is about an hour’s drive from the Dolphins’ stadium.
The Dolphins are having a great 2023 season. Serena can inspire virtually anyone.
So, as you see, she is retired but not really retired.
And when act one went so well, it takes a lot of pressure off of you not to make up for past failures but to keep happily moving forward in the next act.
What do you do, after having an incredible first act, unparalleled in professional female tennis history?
It is time to go to Disney World.
We sure would.
