September 20, 2024,
As the women’s professional tennis world turns, there is so much information being served.
Partnering with the legendary Brad Gilbert, American sensation Coco Gauff won the mighty 2023 US Open. Since that great achievement, Coco’s results have begun to slide. As of this writing, the two recently parted ways.
The team at tennis.com reported, “After a strong start to 2024, which included winning her seventh career WTA singles title in Auckland, New Zealand, and reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, Gauff sputtered through the spring and summer.”
Her recent defeat to fellow American Emma Navarro most likely hastened the re-evaluation of the dynamic duo’s partnership. It will be fascinating to see where Coco goes from here, especially with the 2025 Australian Open looming in the near future.
Still, her resume is incredibly impressive.
Coco has won seven career singles titles, including the 2023 US Open, and nine career doubles titles, including the 2024 French Open.
Ms. Gauff has a career-high WTA rankings of world No. 2 in singles and of world No. 1 in doubles.
A little history.
Coco made her WTA Tour debut in March of 2019 at the Miami Open at the tender age of 15.
She received a wild card into the qualifying draw at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, where she became the youngest player in the tournament’s history to qualify for the main draw.
She certainly made history.
There, she won over Venus Williams and reached the fourth round.
Drum roll please. Coco won her first tour singles title at the 2019 Linz Open. She reached her first major final in women’s doubles at the 2021 US Open and reached her first major singles final at the 2022 French Open. In 2023, Coco won her first WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open and first major singles title at the US Open.
It is a hard act to follow but given Coco’s recent decision for a coaching change, she certainly is not content to just play well.
The global news leader CNN surmises, “The world No. 6 lost in the fourth round of the US Open to American Emma Navarro, who had also bested her in the fourth round at Wimbledon just months before.”
Speaking of Emma Navarro.
The American star had a somewhat surprising and incredible run at the 2024 US Open, reaching the semi-finals before falling to the tournament’s eventual winner in Aryna Sabalenka. Who would have thought? Maybe we all should have thought. Her resume is incredible.
She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 8 by the WTA, achieved on September 9, 2024, and a doubles ranking of No. 93, achieved in August of 2024.
She played college tennis at Virginia and won the NCAA Singles Championship in 2021, later becoming the first women’s singles NCAA champion to reach the US Open semifinals. She won her first WTA Tour title at the 2024 Hobart International.
Stellar.
She has something in common with another American who surged at the 2024 US Open, only to fall to Sabalenka in the finals.
American Jessica Pegula performed incredibly well during the tournament, even defeating the world’s number one player in Poland’s Iga Swiatek. She was so impressive, she defeated her in two sets.
Right out of a Daddy Warbucks fantasy film, both girls are the daughters of financially successful Billionaires. Both young stars were born in the great state of New York.
Jessica’s father is perhaps more well-known. Terry Pegula amassed his fortune in oil and gas, and has since turned it into a sports empire that includes the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. According to Forbes Magazine, his net worth is right around $7.7 billion.
Emma’s father Ben Navarro, is the founder and chief executive of Sherman Financial Group.
According to Bloomberg, “Sherman Financial Group, LLC operates as an investment company. The Company purchases and services performing and non-performing consumer debt originated by financial institutions, credit card companies, and retailers.”
Very substantial.
Mr. Navarro also owns the Cincinnati and Charleston tennis events, and has an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion according to Forbes.
As you can see, big news from the female tennis world abounds.
There is more.
Let’s look into the future.
