October 13, 2024,
Life goes on in women’s tennis after the US Open has concluded. In part because so many stories continue that in some ways started there.
The biggest news off the courts was America’s star player Coco Gauff parting ways with the legendary Coach Brad Gilbert. Apparently the writing was on the wall.
As reported by the global news leader CNN, “Coco Gauff has parted ways with her coach, Brad Gilbert, following a series of poor results culminating in a failed defense of her US Open title.”
Winning the US Open or bust is a very high expectation and standard. It’s a good thing that is not a requirement for all coaches.
After the split, how is Coco faring?
Starring at the WTA Wuhan Open, Coco had a semi-final loss to Aryna Sabalenka 6–1 4–6 4–6.
Coco dominated the opening set against the top seeded Sabalenka, who could not find her game in the first set, but as the match wore on, Coco made the same mistakes that have plagued her during rent tournaments by handing Aryna a number of unforced errors.
The global team at olympics.com shares, “Gauff, who last faced Sabalenka in the Australian Open semi-finals in January which also culminated in defeat, committed nine double faults in each of the second and third sets.”
Shocking. That appears to directly related to a lack of good coaching. Hopefully Coco can coach herself out of that.
Her fellow American, and once doubles partner, Jessica Pegula, had an amazing US Open Final. After the early years in her career where she struggled she finally made a breakthrough but consistently could never make it past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.
Here is what Femcompetitor Magazine wrote about her on September 5, 2023, “Her frustration continues.
The world’s number three, Jessica Pegula was out hit and pushed around by fellow American Madison Keys 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth round, at the 2023 US Open.
When Femcompetitor Magazine (femcompetitor.com) previously featured American tennis star Jessica Pegula, during the 2023 Australian Open, the thinking was, this time could be different.
This time feels different.
There was no point in printing an article like that this time, before, during or after the 2023 US Open.
In fact, it felt like more of the same.
Just look up at the ceiling.
Jessica can’t seem to paint it. Even with a ladder.”
Well, in September of 2024, Jessica not only broke through the quarterfinals but blasted her way into the US Open finals, before she finally fell to the eventual champion in Aryna Sabalenka. Along the way she also soundly defeated the world’s number one in Iga Swiatek, in just two sets.
We watched her along the way and she absolutely earned it. There were no flukes. She soundly won her matches. It was very inspiring. If only we all could achieve our goals if we keep knocking and pounding away.
A great congrats to Jessica.
You can celebrate tennis year round, around the world.
Play, improve your health and be inspired.
Summer is over but, in terms of tennis, Fall can be the best time of year.
Check this out, have fun.
