October 26, 2024,
The fashion industry appears to be coming around. Perhaps slowly.
We have heard much about fast fashion and now, we want to focus on Slow Fashion as well.
A reminder, what is Fast Fashion?
Fast fashion is the business model of replicating recent catwalk trends and high-fashion designs, mass-producing them at a low cost, and bringing them to retail quickly while demand is at its highest.
The term fast fashion is also used generically to describe the products of this business model, particularly clothing and footwear.
Retailers who employ the fast fashion strategy have become large multinationals by driving high turnover of inexpensive seasonal and trendy clothing that appeals to fashion-conscious consumers.
Fast fashion’s environmental impact has also been the subject of controversy. The global fashion industry is responsible for 8–10% of global carbon emissions per year, to which fast fashion is a large contributor. The low cost of production, favoring synthetic materials, chemicals, and minimal pollution abatement measures have led to excess waste.
The concerns are not simply related to solid waste any longer either. Fast fashion packaging is accountable for 40% of plastic waste according to a 2022 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development report.
Let that sink in.
While a recent survey found that nearly 10% of the micro plastics found in the ocean occur from textile waste and discarded fashion clothing which may raise a bit of a concern going forward.
This, among a number of other factors, is why many people, especially women and the young, are turning to Slow Fashion.
The informative team at goodonyou.eco surmise, “Make an effort to keep yourself informed as you dive into ethical and sustainable fashion for teens.”
Let’s wrap our brain around that.
Slow fashion is an aspect of sustainable fashion and a concept describing the opposite to fast fashion, part of the “slow movement” advocating for clothing and apparel manufacturing in respect to people, environment and animals.
How do you personally feel about that?
It is an alternative to fast fashion because it promotes a more ethical and sustainable way of living and consuming.
As such, contrary to the industrial practices of fast fashion conglomerates, slow fashion involves local artisans and the use of eco-friendly materials, with the goal of preserving crafts and the environment which, ultimately, provides value to all, slow fashion brands, consumers and retailers.
Applause to that.
There is an incredible group that is educating and entertaining us regarding Slow Fashion. Check it out.
