January 20, 2025,
Smoothies are not just for summer. They are just so delightful and refreshing.
Keep telling yourself that. It’s okay.
We keep telling ourselves that.
When was the last time you had a smoothie? Have you ever made a smoothie?
If you’ve never made one, a smoothie is a drink made from pureed raw fruit and or vegetables, using a blender. Not to be confused with a milkshake and it is very debatable which drink tastes better. We are fairly certain the smoothie is healthier. Time to take a closer look at smoothies.
Some basics.
A smoothie often has a liquid base such as fruit juice, dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, ice cream or cottage cheese. Smoothies may be made using other ingredients, such as non-dairy milk, crushed ice, sweeteners (honey or sugar), vinegar, whey powder, chocolate or nutritional supplements, among others by personal choice.
Health food stores on the West Coast of the United States began selling smoothies with the invention of the electric blender.
Sounds great. We are getting summer enticed already.
For you athletes, focus on protein.
A protein smoothie is a combination of water or milk, protein powder, fruits, and vegetables. They can be consumed any part of the day and are used as protein supplement for those who want to increase their protein intake. Protein powder can have a chalky taste when mixed individually by itself with milk or water. The protein smoothie improves the taste of the protein powder through addition of fruits or other sweeteners.
Wonderful. Big sip.
Typically we have purchased our smoothies from sandwich shops but this year we really are going to keep an open mind to other smoothie experimenting options.
One of the options we haven’t previously thought of are smoothie subscription boxes.
This was one of the few industries that actually did well during the pandemic.
As reported by secondmeasure.com, “Since January 2019, the market size for smoothie subscription boxes has tripled. Sales accelerated the most in the early months of the pandemic, and monthly year-over-year sales growth in 2020 averaged 97 percent. Smoothie box companies also experienced noticeable sales spikes in January of each year.”
The healthfulness of a smoothie depends on its ingredients and their proportions. Many smoothies include large or multiple servings of fruits and vegetables, which are recommended in a healthy diet and intended to be a meal replacement.
However, fruit juice containing high amounts of sugar can increase caloric intake and promote weight gain. Similarly, ingredients such as protein powders, sweeteners, or ice cream are often used in smoothie recipes, some of which contribute mostly to flavor and further caloric intake.
It’s easy to go off the nutrition rails since incredible smoothies come in all flavors and styles.
Our personal favorites are strawberry, peanut butter, banana and just plain old reliable vanilla.
We love variety.
Okay, we are closing our eyes and picturing what you are thinking. Got it. So you want to make a smoothie.
Take a napkin, smoothie in hand, let’s walk across the street to the bookstore and learn how to make a masterpiece.
