Singer or Actress, when you see one person perform exceptionally well in both venues it can make you surge with amazement.

The sensational Janelle Monae exceptionally fills both roles.

Janelle Monáe is an American singer, songwriter, rapper and actress.

She has received ten Grammy Award nominations, and is the recipient of a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Children’s and Family Emmy Award.

Ms. Monáe has also been honored with the ASCAP Vanguard Award; as well as the Rising Star Award (2015) and the Trailblazer of the Year Award (2018) from Billboard Women in Music.

She has also ventured into acting, first gaining attention for starring in the 2016 films Moonlight and Hidden Figures.

For portraying engineer Mary Jackson in the latter, she was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She has also starred in the films Harriet (2019) and Glass Onion (2022), and the television series Homecoming (2020).

She launched her record label, Wondaland Arts Society in a joint venture with Epic Records in 2015, and has signed artists including Jidenna, Roman GianArthur and St. Beauty.

The film that caught our attention in a shocking way that first brought Janelle to our realm is Antebellum.

Antebellum is a 2020 American drama horror film written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz in their feature directorial debuts.

The film stars Janelle, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons and Gabourey Sidibe, and follows a 21st-century African-American woman who wakes to find herself mysteriously in a Southern slave plantation from which she must escape.

In a Louisiana slave plantation run by Confederate soldiers, slaves are treated harshly and not allowed to speak unless spoken to. Those who attempt to escape are killed and their bodies burned in a crematorium.

After a failed escape attempt, a black man named Eli watches as his wife is murdered and her body placed in the crematorium.

A woman who had been assisting them is brutally beaten and branded by the general until she submits to being called Eden.

We think you get the point.

For us, it was like we walked back in time and, horrified, got stuck ourselves.
