March 21, 2020,
Do you really need to read a review about how great Haagen Dazs ice cream tastes?
In past times, probably not. You are the reviewer yourself. So are we, given how much Haagen Dazs ice cream we have consumed over the years.
Häagen-Dazs is an American ice cream brand, established by Reuben and Rose Mattus in Brooklyn Heights, New York, in 1961.
Starting with only three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee, the company opened its first retail store in Brooklyn, New York, on November 15, 1976.
The business now has franchises throughout the United States and many other countries around the world including Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, China, Lebanon, New Zealand, Peru, and Brazil.
The company also produces ice cream bars, ice cream cakes, sorbet, frozen yogurt, and gelato.
At their home, Haagen Dazs shares, “For more than 50 years, our passion for crafting the perfect flavors and creamiest textures using only the finest ingredients is what has set the Häagen-Dazs® brand apart. We’ve never wavered on the principles that made us who we are from the very beginning. Today, the Häagen-Dazs® brand continues to transform the finest ingredients into extraordinary experiences bite by bite. The Häagen-Dazs® brand brings perfectly balanced flavors and true indulgence to a new line with the launch of frozen yogurt.”
Once a company gets bought out by another, it does raise questions in terms of quality, ingredients and price.
On December 11, 2019, this news sent shock waves through ice cream lovers around the world.
At usatoday.com they reported, “Nestlé is selling its U.S. ice cream business in a deal valued at $4 billion that would create the world’s largest ice cream market.
The Swiss company announced Wednesday that it plans to hand over control to Froneri, a joint venture Nestlé created in 2016 with PAI Partners to manage Nestlé’s European ice cream business in 20 countries.”
Nestlé’s ice cream products include Dreyer’s, Häagen-Dazs, Outshine, Skinny Cow, Edy’s and Drumstick. Very sweet.
It is not the first time Haagen Dazs has been sold.
The Pillsbury Company bought Häagen-Dazs in 1983.
In 1999, Pillsbury and Nestlé merged their U.S. and Canadian ice cream operations into a joint venture called Ice Cream Partners.
Please keep up.
General Mills, in turn, bought Pillsbury in 2001 and seceded its interest in the joint venture.
That same year, Nestlé exercised its contractual right to buy out General Mills’ interest in Ice Cream Partners, which included the right to a 99-year license for the Häagen-Dazs brand, until 2100. Since then, pursuant to that license, the Dreyer’s subsidiary of Nestlé has produced and marketed Häagen-Dazs products in the United States and Canada.
“What makes me happy is just curling up in with my mom in her bed and watching a marathon of ‘CSI’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ episodes with pints of ice cream.”…Taylor Swift
In terms of taste, there have been changes.
In 2016, Häagen-Dazs® began phasing out GMO ingredients from its products and set a goal to transition out all GMO ingredients from every flavor.
Today, flavors made with no GMO ingredients include vanilla, vanilla bean, strawberry, rum raisin, chocolate, chocolate chip, pineapple coconut, coffee, chocolate and chocolate peanut butter.
For clarification, what is GMO.
A genetically modified organism (GMO) is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.
So if you’ve noticed a mild taste difference over the years, this is probably part of the reason.
Still, the great minds at Haagen Dazs continue to create new and exciting flavors.
Here is the inside scoop.
Häagen-Dazs® Announces Limited Edition Ruby Cacao Collection in Stores and Shops
The brand new products feature the unique berry taste of the ruby cacao bean, deliciously complemented by extraordinary ice cream.
OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Häagen-Dazs brand is bringing an intense new taste and color experience to its premium ice cream for a limited time. After dark, milk and white chocolate, the ruby cacao bean is the most extraordinary discovery in 80 years.
“The Häagen-Dazs brand encourages consumers to indulge in the finest, and the ruby cacao collection is an extraordinary new experience for people to try,” said Rachel Jaiven, Häagen-Dazs Brand Manager. “The flavor is fresh, fruity and smooth with an aftertaste of berry and a hint of cacao.
