July 6, 2020,
Choosing what hotel you’d like to stay at during a pandemic provides you with many more and less viable choices at the same time.
Some hotels will offer you a steep discounted rate due to the decrease in travel.
Other hotels cannot offer you anything since they are not open.
It can be a little confusing. The key is to do your research and a great starting place is the American Hotel & Lodging Association.
The American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) is an industry trade group with thousands of members including hotel brands, owners, management companies, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), independent hotels, bed and breakfasts, state hotel associations and industry partners and suppliers.
Its role at various times has included the publication of hotel directories, market research, support of standardization efforts, public or political advocacy for the interests of hotel owners and the establishment or promotion of training programs and facilities for hotel personnel.
Good to know. Every industry needs someone to speak for them. AHLA is happy to speak to the public.
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the American Hotel & Lodging Association announced industry-wide safety guidelines in May of 2020.
So how are things progressing during the pandemic?
As reported by boston.com/travel, “According to a survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, 44 percent of Americans are planning an overnight vacation in 2020 and 68 percent say they’re likely to stay in a hotel.”
Those statistics are better than we thought. There’s more. Not all of the news is good. As you might expect during a global pandemic, most of it isn’t.
The team at hospitalitynet.org add, “As a result of the sharp drop in travel demand from COVID-19, state and local tax revenue from hotel operations will drop by $16.8 billion in 2020, according to a new report by Oxford Economics released today by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA).”
That really hurts. You begin to wonder how can government agencies continue to fund services if they don’t have a substantial tax base?
There’s more.
The local group at oregonlive.com related, “The American Hotel and Lodging Association, a trade association for the industry, estimates that Oregon’s state and local governments will lose more than $170 million in tax revenue this year due to the decline in hotel operations and occupancy.”
The article goes on to print that Oregon hotels were charging one-third less per night in mid-June and occupancy rates across the state were down by nearly half compared to the same time last year, according to data from STR, a research company that tracks the hotel industry.
Too, the recovery has been especially slow in Portland. Hotel revenue was down 88% compared to last year for the week of June 14-20, according to STR data.
Now that people appear to be willing to take a few more risks and travel more, one hotel chain is trying to get their attention with a powerful incentive.
