July 7, 2023,
Living well is the best revenge.
Makes sense.
You’ve heard that statement before. Right?
For those of us who wanted to get back at someone, who didn’t believe in us or said disparaging things about us, being extremely successful says volumes.
You barely have to say a word.
You just need to continue to make a statement.
With success.
It is in human nature to do so. Isn’t that why, in part, we go to family and high school reunions?
So, what type of statement have you made?
If it is not the statement you have hoped for, there is still time to learn from your mistakes and begin the process of making a new statement.
What might it involve?
Human history provides us with a blueprint.
Raising a beautiful family, successfully staying married to one person, owning your home, having a good paying job or owning your own business and, drum roll please, making a lot of money.
Yes, money is not everything, but it makes so many things possible.
Now, that’s a lot. But some people seem to do it well.
Let’s turn to television.
If you can get past Mr. Bill Cosby’s public life, the television show he starred in was brilliant.
It captivated a nation.
The Cosby Show is an American television sitcom co-created by and starring Bill Cosby.
The series aired from September 20, 1984, to April 30, 1992, on NBC. It focuses on an upper middle-class family living in Brooklyn, New York.
The series was based on comedy routines in Bill Cosby’s stand-up comedy act, which in turn were based on his family life. The series was followed by a spin-off, titled A Different World, broadcast from 1987 to 1993 for 144 episodes in six seasons.
TV Guide listed the series as “TV’s biggest hit in the 1980s”, adding it “almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC’s ratings fortunes”, while also ranking it 28th on their list of 50 Greatest Shows.
For those of us who are older, could there ever be more cherished fathers than John Robinson, in Lost in Space? Ward Cleaver in Leave It To Beaver? Robert Young in Father Knows Best?
For decades we didn’t think so.
Now? Have to say, we would add Cliff Huxtable to that list. He seemed to be right on the mark about everything and had some of the cutest kids to prove it.
Success? Making a statement? He checked all of the boxes. Look, warning. If you guys didn’t get along in high school, stay away from him at a high school reunion.
He was a doctor and his wife was an attorney, they have five wonderful good looking and well-adjusted children, he makes boat loads of money, they have a lovely home and have a wide circle of friends.
After listening to that resume?
He looks at you with a wry smile and asks, “Well, how are you doing?”
Don’t answer that.
Hey, wait, there is Nathan on the other side of the room. Tell him it was good seeing him and immediately bolt stage left.
TV Guide listed the series as “TV’s biggest hit in the 1980s”, adding it “almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC’s ratings fortunes”, while also ranking it 28th on their list of 50 Greatest Shows.
With this list, Cliff Huxtable was named as the “Greatest Television Dad” in 2014.
The Cosby Show spent five consecutive seasons as the number-one rated show on television and, along with All in the Family, is the only sitcom in the history of the Nielsen ratings as the number-one show for five seasons, having spent the series in the top 20 ratings.
Now, that is making a statement.
There is no, one shoe size fits all, formula.
We all have to find our own way to make a statement but sometimes we could use a little help.
Lets’ walk over to the bookstore. Get a second opinion.
